1st, 2nd & 3rd-year Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian

6 Weeks in Pittsburgh

1st, 2nd, and 3rd-year Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian classes taught at the SLI provide the equivalent of an academic year's worth of study. Classes are taught on the University of Pittsburgh campus and meet Monday - Friday from 9am to 3pm. In addition to intensive language classes, students attend BCS films, lectures on politics and culture, singing classes, and cooking classes.

Housing: 

Students may select to live in the dormitories (approx. $33/night) or locate an apartment to sublet.

Summer Language Institute Scholarships:
$1,000 to a maximum award of $5,000

Foreign Language Area Studies (FLAS) Awards:
Full tuition funding + $2,500 living stipend.

ELIGIBILITY:
US citizens currently enrolled in a US institution of higher education at the undergraduate or graduate level. Students applying for language programs at the 2nd-year level or higher

TO APPLY:
Complete this form and send it to sliadmin@pitt.edu. Include two letters of recommendation from professors with your application. Letters should comment on your aptitude for language learning and/or the relevance of the SLI language you intend to study to your overall academic and/or career goals.

Note: If you wish to have your Summer Foreign Language & Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowship application considered for a possible advantage based on financial need, please submit a copy of the Student Aid Report generated from your current Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to sliadmin@pitt.edu by the March 2, 2018 application deadline. Please be aware that it may take up to three weeks for you to receive your Student Aid Report after filing your FAFSA.

10 Week Hybrid Program: Pittsburgh + Podgorica, Montenegro

Students may add a 4-week abroad component onto the 6-week domestic BCS program. The abroad portion takes place at the University of Donja Gorica in Podgorica, Montenegro. While there, students will continue their intensive language classes and also participate in an extensive excursion program including trips to Cetinje, Lovcen, Petrovac, the ancient Roman settlement of Duklja, and an optional trip to Dubrovnik. Upper-level students who would like to do only the 4-week abroad portion (and not the 6 week domestic portion) of the program should write to Kathleen Manukyan manukyan1@pitt.edu.
