- Students who have completed the equivalent of one year of Bulgarian language study can continue their study of Bulgarian in an SLI program operated at New Bulgarian University in Sofia. This course is scheduled to follow the SLI Introductory Bulgarian course, so that students will be able to complete the equivalent of three semesters of Bulgarian language study by enrolling in both Introductory and Intermediate Bulgarian in the SLI in the same summer. Excursions within Sofia are incorporated into the Intermediate program. The approximate dates are July 18-August 12, 2005. Prerequisite: Slav 0213 (Beginning Intensive Bulgarian) or equivalent of one year of college level language study. - The class begins with the class in Pittsburgh (June 6-July 15), and continues with the same textbook (First Year Polish) in Poland (July 16-August 13), covering two more lessons than the group in Pittsburgh. In Poland the course changes from 5 hours to 3 hours per day devoted to the primary textbook, with 2 hours per day being based on materials supplementary to the textbook on practical topics especially relevant to the stay in Poland (travel, shopping, cooking, social customs, restaurant eating, time and dates, etc.) Instructors are chosen from the National Polish Language Center in Lódz. Meetings with Polish students, and excursions both around Lódz and to other Polish cities (Warsaw, Krakow, Gdansk) is incorporated into the program. - A rigorous presentation of the basic uses of all nominal and verbal categories: declensions of nouns and adjectives in all cases, singular and plural, deepening the knowledge of aspect uses, verbs of motion, conditional sentences, imperatives, indefinite pronouns, comparison of adjectives, time expressions, prepositional phrases. Attention paid to phraseology on both oral and written levels. Introduction to participles and verbal adverbs. Great emphasis is placed on developing fluency in conversation. - This course offers a thorough introduction to the basic categories of pronunciation, grammar, and syntax and a rigorous treatment of the sound and writing systems, followed by presentation of the basic categories of the noun and verb: gender, number, case, tense, and aspect.
